The flooding was so bad it ruined everything. I don’t know if I can bring myself to go back there. It doesn’t feel like my home anymore.”

Every year flood damage costs millions of pounds. It will take a long time before you can get your life back to normal following a flood. Download our full guide via the link on your left, or read our quick tips, below.

In the event of flooding, there may be risks of ill health due to water-borne infection.

There are also potential risks from chemical contamination and the psychological trauma caused by flooding should not be underestimated.

The guidelines give advice on what measures should be taken to reduce these risks.

This survey aims to find out more about how the flooding affected people’s health, for example, as a result of accidents or stress.

To really understand the full effects of the flood, we need to talk to lots of different people who have had different experiences. That’s why we’d like you to complete the survey even if your house or flat has not been flooded.

We want to find out what information people had about the effects of flooding on health and whether any more information would have been helpful. We would also like to know how you found out about health advice during the flooding and any better ways of getting information to you.

If you take part in this survey, what we learn from your experience will help us to improve the information and advice we can give to people if flooding – or a similar emergency – happens again in future, anywhere in the country.

We will also ask you for permission to contact you again in the future to find out if anything has changed. All the information you provide will be treated in the strictest confidence and no personal details will be revealed. Taking part is completely voluntary and would not affect the healthcare that you receive in any way.

After completing the questionnaire if you feel that you need some specific help or health information please contact your doctor.

Floods are helpful to the natural environment – they can deliver nutrient rich soils.

A flood can be an evnironmental disaster if the land is being used by humans – then erosion etc. from minor floods is a concern. In massive floods often carry contaminates, disease, etc. through a vast area. Then the benefit to the environment of the richer soils is negated by the adverse affect that the flood has caused

So it truly depends on if you what you mean by “the environment’

Floods make an enormous impact on the environment and society. Floods destroy drainage systems in cities, causing raw sewage to spill out into bodies of water. Also, in cases of severe floods, buildings can be significantly damaged and even destroyed. This can lead to catastrophic effects on the environment as many toxic materials such as paint, pesticide and gasoline can be released into the rivers, lakes, bays, and ocean, killing maritime life. Floods may also cause millions of dollars worth of damage to a city, both evicting people from their homes and ruining businesses. Floods cause significant amounts of erosion to coasts, leading to more frequent flooding if not repaired.

However, floods do make a slight positive impact on the environment. Floods spread sediment containing beneficial nutrients to topsoil that might never arrive there otherwise.

I will say that the bad effects of flooding out weighs the one good effect.

This is what fooding does:

1. Economy

Economic loss

The flooding in Jiangxi of China in 1998 caused great damage. The economic loss was HK$156 billion, 400 buildings surrounding the lake were inundated, leaving more than 1 million people homeless.

Resources used in reconstruction

After flooding, government has to input many resources for aiding or reconstruction, e.g., police force, fire control, aid worker, resources used for resisting flood, etc. This also brings loss to society.

2. Environment

Traffic

Flooding will lead to the damages of roads, collapse of bridges or traffic congestion, which may affect the daily operation.

Damaging the farmland

Flooding brings too much water which will cause damage to farmland.

3. Human Beings

People died and lose their homes

Flooding will cause death and injuries. In year 1998, 0.23 billion of people were affected in the flooding of Xian, including 3 thousands people dead, 1 million of people lost their homes. In 1996, the monsoon flood in India affected more than five million people in the northern and eastern part of the country. Severe floods have also killed some 200 people in India and Bangladesh and left millions homeless and starvation.

4. Disease

Flooding usually brings infectious diseases, e.g. military fever, pneumonic plague, dermatopathia, dysentery, common cold (type A), breakbone fever, etc. And for those areas which have no electric supply due to flooding, food poisoning may occur as food may not be properly frozen.

Sometimes, but not always. For example, the Nile delta (in Egypt) would flood, leaving rich sediment which local farmers would take advantage of.

However, floods are often a disadvantage to civilization when people live where there are often floods — leaving destruction to property and business.

It does help in some of the Asian countries because tonnes of alluvial, a mineral rich sediment that enhances soil is deposited. The waters also provide a large source of fish and shrimp, while crops and livestock flourish during flooding seasons.
