For somebody with a good understanding of our past…?

What are some examples of how history tried to repeat itself, but our knowledge of the past prevented it? If it helps at all, I’m writing an essay giving two examples to support this quote by Warren G. Harding (29th President of the U.S.):

“It is everlastingly true that on the whole the best guide to the future is to be found in a proper understanding of the past.”

I have a few ideas of my own, but I’d really like to see if anyone could think of a past mistake that influenced our knowledge of preventing/stopping something similar, but more recent…

Thanks tons to those who answered!

unfortunately, there is a limited amount of examples during which our knowledge of the past helped us. I could probably give you thousands of examples of how history repeated itself and the government was just too stupid.

Good luck with your essay!!!
