so 12 is the average

each number in the average must be greater than zero

to find the highest/largest number that can be used, you must us the lowest number possible for the other numbers.

meaning:

if x=greatest integer

(1+1+1+1+x)/5=12

multiply each side by 5 to get:

1+1+1+1+x=60

subtract all the ones (so subtract 4 from each side) and you get:

x=56

so, your answer is (E) 56
