For f(x) = 3x + 1, find and simplify the expression:

[ f(2+h)- f(4)] / h

thanks alot!

f(x) = 3x + 1,

so f(2+h) = 3(2+h) + 1 = 6 + 3h + 1 = 3h + 7,

and f(4) = 3(4) + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13

So,

[f(2+h) – f(4)] / h

= [(3h + 7) – 13] / h

= (3h – 6) / h

And I think that’s the simplified expression. I mean, I suppose you can continue…

= (3h / h) – (6 / h)

…the h’s cancel out for the term, (3h / h), leaving you with…

= 3 – (6 / h)

But personally, this answer doesn’t necessarily look any more simplified than the previous answer (to me, anyway)…but just to be on the safe side, I’d go with:

The simplified expression is: 3 – (6 / h).
