An archetype is a pattern from which copies can be made. Examples in literature are characters like the hero, the outcast, the scapegoat, or situations like a quest or a mission.

An allusion is a device in which there is an indirect reference to an object or circumstance that has occurred or existed in an external content, but it is up to the reader to make the connection.

An archetype is an overarching idea or concept that spans time and culture: the search for the lost self is a big one. Allusions are references made in one literary work to other ones–the author is playing off someone else’s idea and adding their own particular twist to it.
