Does anyone know how to make paper look old?

I have to write a letter as a civil war soldier. I want to make it look more realistic, so what’s the best way to make paper look like old parchment?

Soak it in tea, then let dry to “age”, you can also burn the edges or slightly tear them.

i’m an indoors fashion designer and function actually achieved this many circumstances. Print the information first, yet suited to apply a laser printer or the print will “run” and smear once you’re making the paper look previous. Make a cup of robust tea and use a small piece of towel to dip into it and blot onto the published paper. you are able to fall down the paper to create fold lines which will soak up the tea greater advantageous than the flat paper. confirm you variety the intensity of the tea stains. in case you decide directly to create edges that look previous, on an identical time as the paper remains moist from the tea, tear parts around the sides of the internet site (the moist paper will form of “feather” the place torn. i’ve got even see people take a candle and gently singe the sides (be careful to no longer permit it seize hearth) on an identical time as the paper is moist.

I think it would work if you crinkled it up and soaked it in tea. You could tear some of the edges up a bit. Then hang it up with a clip or clothespin until dry. I think paper used during the civil war was smaller than typical 8″x11″ that is used now. You may even want to try a piece of linen type stationery, or other paper with texture.

Good luck!

Leave the paper under the sun or a lamp for a few days, and that will make it have a yellow tint, also try folding and unfolding it several times.

The best is probably to throw it in the dryer with something heavier than the paper.

Good Luck!

I’ve never had to actually do this but if you make tea, put your paper in a pan, and pour it over it and let it soak and tehn put it in the oven, it’s supposed to come out looking really old. I would HIGHLY suggest trying it out on a blank sheet of the same paper that you are using before though, just in case. Maybe even type or write something on it, jsut in case it does something funky to the ink.

I have done something kinda like this before. I used card-stock paper in like an ivory color and printed the letter from my computer in Script font. I then crumbled it up, smoothed it back out, and burned the edges with a lighter so it looked charred.

Ignore the people telling you to burn it. You’re trying to simulate a civil war letter, not a hollywood-style pirate’s treasure map.

Lay it on top of your car dashboard or in the back window, whichever is facing the sun, whenever you park. Turn it over each time. It shouldn’t take too long and will be very natural.

My method is by using paper from a brown paper roll, put rips in it and maybe crumple it a little and instant fake old parchment!!

get tan colored paper. Crumple it up for a while until soft. Tear edges for a rough look. Burn the edges with a match or candle to get the darkened edge

Burn the edges slightly,(making sure not to burn the whole thing) crumple the corners a little, fold it a couple times, and even add a tiny stain in the corner. That should do it.

yeah burn the edges of the paper but also run some wet teabags or moist coffee grinds all over the paper to give it an old burnt dirty look…. then set the paper to dry for an hour or so and it will look awesome!!
