Is this your homework that you are expecting us to do? A graveyard is just like it sounds. A yard where everyone is dead and buried.

first find words that are true for the place (sunny, quiet, peaceful, breezy) and then use the thesaurus to find words that mean the same thing, but are more suited to the mood you want to give the reader, or combine them with other adjectives that contrast, and cause people to think “what?”

A mourning sunshaft

Then try to use words that have alliteration.

sunshaft struck the chipped and weather-worn tombstone.

then mention something that in a different way talks about the business of the graveyard. Obviously, a graveyard is all about death. So, we need a little death image, or two.

A blue and black bird pursues his business with avian one-eyed intensity – searching the ground for the careless crawlers, who from today will tunnel no more.

Even the image of a setting sun would symbolize death, and the shadow of a tombstone slowly extending toward touching one of your feet would be nice.

A mourning sunshaft struck

the chipped and weather-worn tombstone.

A blue and black bird perched,

pursuing his business

with avian one-eyed intensity –

searching the ground for the careless crawlers,

who from today will tunnel no more.

The shadow of a bird-bill, sharply cast,

extends across and sits on my shoe.

If you use this, your teacher will know it wasn’t you, so better read it once, forget it, and then try to write your own.

USE A THESAURUS! It is your best friend!!
