It seems that a religious novel would be a book or story that has a religious theme throughout.
Some religious authors write about characters in their religious works (like “Ruth” in the Bible). Some write modern day stories with a religious bent (Frank Peretti is a well known “religious” author).

A Christian, or religious novel is any novel that expounds and illustrates a Christian world view in its plot, its characters, or both. Any novel that deals with Christian themes in a positive way could also be Christian novel.
Twentieth century proponents of the form would include G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis.
