Ok…in answering your question, since it’s one of philosophy and theology, I need to answer with philosophy and theology. Since it was asked in context of God and Christianity, that’s how I’m going to answer. Here goes:

Time is not infinite; God is. God created time because we, as finite beings, need time in order to exist. It’s a basic framework that we need to have.

All physical beings are finite, they have a lifespan. Again, God is not finite, he is not physical matter, he is a spiritual being that does not require time. Time, along with everything that we know in the physical universe, is his creation.

Genesis 1 uses a Hebrew word for “create” that means “create from nothing”. It’s different from taking paint, a brush, and a canvas and creating a picture; it’s like creating the paint, brush, and canvas from nothing to begin with. Only God is capable of that kind of creation. Because we are his creations, and we are created “in his image”, we have the capacity for creativity. We can compose music, write a book, paint or sculpt, or explain a complex concept.

However, we cannot create from nothing. We are creative, but we are not omnipotent (all-powerful). Only God has that ability, and because we don’t, it can be hard for us to understand. Because he is not limited by time, or by matter, he was able to create time and matter.

Again…not trying to “impose” views on anyone, just answering the question 🙂 Hope that helps!
