Through the character Crooks, Steinbeck shows the powerful nightmare of the American Dream. “Hundres of em, go and quite and go on,” Crooks says, “every one of em got a little piece of land in their head and none of em ever gets it” (Steinbeck page). Crooks express the idea that the American Dream is a lie, and that those who believe in it are deceiving themselves.

Wow– I helped with this yesterday! It sounds good, except “express” should be “expresses.” It doesn’t slide between past and present tense. As it is, it’s all present tense, and that’s appropriate for an essay.

stay in one tense, you seem to be sliding between present and past. pick one and stick with it. otherwise, it’s good.
