During the Revolutionary War, why was someone sign the Declaration of Independence could either make then a hero or a traitor? Please help me, i have no clues!!

Someone who signed the Declaration of Independence could be a hero because if they signed it, it would mean that they are standing up for freedom. They could also be considered a traitor because signing the declaration would mean that they are turning against their mother country, Great Britain.

If the Colonies lost the war, England would have hung them for traitors.
