The original text for the Constitution did not go far enough in guaranteeing certain civil liberties so the first amendment and the rest of the Bill of Right was added.

The First Amendment starts by prohibiting the Government from establishing a national religion.

It also guarantees freedom of religion.

It guarantees the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press.

It also also the people the right to assemble and demonstrate as well as the ability to petition the government.

The text is short and Sweet, but the effect both as a guarantee of civil liberties and how farther it goes beyond the origin of the English Bill of Rights.

Sounds like we’re doing your homework for you…the first ammendment covers a lot of stuff – religion, speech, assembly, freedom of the press (sometimes referred to as freedom of expression)…so, in essence, it says that the government won’t infringe on people’s rights in these areas – important to note that this talks about the GOVERNMENT not infringing on these rights. They are not absolute and cannot be forced on individuals or employers for example.

Technically, this is not that easy. There are lawyers who just pretty study the first amendment.

To say and express yourself in any manner you desire as long as it doesn’t particularly insult and hurt a particular, i.e. slander and it is illegal. And to form and practice your ideas and beliefs. Especially, without government persecution.

However, political correctness and society’s limitations make it really complicated.
