Can someone explain the metric system?

Can someone explain the metric system to me please, with respect to kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters, and micrometers. I know it’s based on a scale of 10 but I really don’t get it and I’m not so good at math. Why is it so easy as people say it is? Can you explain how it works. Thanks!

There are 10 millimiters in a centimeter.

There are 100 centimeters in a meter.

There are 1000 meters in a kilometer.

The reason it is so easy is that 10 is a very easy number to multiply and divide with.

For example, if you were asked how many meters in 5 km, you would know straight away that it is 5000.

Metric system is based on decimals, like our money.
There are about 10 things to memorize.

US Customary is based on fractions and the material being measured.
About 1000 memory items.
