You might work out the carbon footprint of the community and look at ways to reduce it.

Look at roof shapes and how they affect heating and cooling needs in the community.

Look at the concrete footprint of the community and its effect on the aquifers under it.

Investigate how urban sprawl is increasing energy consumption. Model the differences between a tightly packed community and a sprawling one.

Do a bird census (or other animal census) of the area. This isn’t easy.

Find a manufacturer in your area that can make prefabricated composting bins for home gardeners from recycled packing material and plastic milk jugs, soda bottles, etc. Get local businesses to sponsor the cost of making them and offer them to local consumers at whatever donation they’d be willing to make in order to raise money for a study on reduction of municipal waste disposal in your community.
