The attention getters we were taught in drama class are:

Humor — tell a joke or a funny story

Narrative — start your speech with a story, tell how you became interested, why it’s important

Shocking or startling statement — say something that is unexpected and catches the audience off guard

Picturesque Scene/story — begin with descriptive scene or story, draws the audience in

Quotation — use a famous or clever saying

Rhetorical Question (aka the weasel way out) — ask a question to get the audience thinking

I did a speech on stem cell research last year! I used a little anecdote type thing something like:

Imagine the world 20 years from now. Imagine a world without incurable diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimers, and cancer. Imagine a world where people didn’t die because doctors couldn’t do anything for them. 20 years from now, this dream could be reality, all because of stem cell research…

Then you could go on and state your thesis or something…
