Biological diversity breeds stronger plants and animals. The opposite of biological diversity is inbreeding, and I’m certain you know what that can cause in humans and other animals.
Perhaps cultural diversity can be somewhat the same. You could discuss how experiencing different facets of other cultures makes you a culturally stronger person. It gives you the chance to accept or reject different foods, music, clothing, languages, and so on giving what you have strength because you have chosen the best for yourself.
I hate the word “tolerance”. To tolerate something or someone is just to put up with it or him. Acceptance is harder, but better. Perhaps, tolerance is the best we can hope for at times though. One thing I know is, we had better learn to get along with the 6 or so billion neighbors we’ve got because none of us is going to live on another planet any time soon.
People tend to want to embrace diversity. It should be in everyday life in everything to viewpoints, race, religion, personalities, everything. The thing is, such a big deal is made of it, that all people can see and point out are the differences. In a truly equal society, and this has been proven over and over and over again, there is very little social “diversity”. All people are regarded as equally important. If treated in this way, they will all strive to achieve the same things that give them peace and security. As long as society keeps pointing to one group and says, “they are different because of a,b, and c” folks will start to look for ways that that group is inferior to another. Society has created many of these so called “inferiorities” in the way it has treated particular groups. These “inferior” traits are really traits that any group would develop if geared to see themselves as inferior.
The transverse is also true. If one group is labeled as superior and given benefits of belonging to a group that has been labeled superior, the individuals within that group will have a pyschological advantage of those groups deemed inferior. How we see ourselves as individuals is what limits our ability to achieve. That is why there are laws and “set asides” for minority groups, to make up for what occured in the past and is still prevalent in our society.
