Calculating a density question…?

I got a question that I can’t figure out. If a plastic object with a density of 3 g/cm^3 is heated so it triples volume while expanding what is its new density. is it 9? I wasnt given the mass or volume of the object so how would i figure it out?

it’s not 9, it’s 1g/cm^3

first of all, using common sense, there is still the same mass, but more volume, this can’t be more dense, so it’s definitely not 9!

now assume u have Xcm^3 of this material, this means that it has the mass of 3*X grams.

now when it’s heated and it’s volume is tripled, this means that the volume is now 3*X cm^3 (dont confuse this with the mass), so now to calculate the new density, divide the mass by the volume:

(3*X)g/(3*X)cm^3=1g/cm^3

hope i’ve helped!
