Democracy describes a small number of related forms of government. The fundamental features of democracies include government based on majority rule and the consent of the governed, the existence of free and fair elections, the protection of political minorities, respect for basic human rights, equality before the law, due process, and political pluralism.[1] With origins in ancient Greece, Rome, South Asia, and North and South America [2] democracy has generally grown and expanded throughout history.[citation needed] The principles of democracy emphasize the importance of the individual in the context of government and, today, are a major influence around the world. Though the term democracy is typically used in the context of a political state, the principles are also applicable to other groups and organizations.

In contemporary world politics, democracy has become a significant concept, with most nations in the world claiming to adhere to the broad principles of democracy. However, there is significant diversity among nations describing themselves as democratic in the modern world, making democracy increasingly difficult to define; for instance, the North Korean constitution describes North Korea as a democratic state,[3] but most commentators in Western nations have described it as a totalitarian dictatorship.[4]

What do you think democracy is? Is it the form of government set up by the Athenians in ancient Greece where diplomacy and dialogue were held to high standards? Is the current form of rich people getting ahold of power in Congress and not relenquishing it (both Democrat and Republicans do it) a form of the modern concept? Is it a government of the people, for the people and by the people?

It’s a vague question that is supposed to make you think of what it is. It’s an opinion piece, somewhat rooted in philosophy, but mostly what you think it is/should be. Take a look at the forms of government, from Monarchies to Dictatorships… and no, the US is not a dictatorship… Venezuela, is a dictatorship. See how their elected officials come to power, then remain there. Democracy is supposed to be more an elusive power, that people can hold on to for a limited amount of time… however, there are several Congressmen and Senators who have more than fulfilled their time… They just like the perks and power and don’t want to get a real job.

Good luck, you could write a book on this one question, but 1 page should be easy enough…

i think democracy is too expensive right now, which is why big corporation always wins in here and which is why in a lot of poor countries people can not afford it.

Can we find an innovative way to organize this wonderful political activity called Democracy in a less expensive way? I wish internet and youtube will help each common man/woman like you and I to understand the truth, find truth and lower the cost of Democracy in general
