1 cuz Grendel has been attacking Heorot. He is angered by the singing and an outcast from society, attacks the hall and kills and devours many of Hroðgar’s warriors while they sleep. Hroðgar and his people, helpless against Grendel’s attacks, abandon Heorot.

I haven’t had to read this story since high school but as I remember the biggest topic was the usage of Light vs. Darkness in symbolism to Good and evil, I be live it was the first or one of the first to symbolize darkness as being evil and light symbolizing good. Hope the helps you a little bit, try to look for that in the story it should be seen in the adjectives describing the two places
