Beowulf Paper – Paragraph 2A?
The heroes of our century all present a form of uncertainty or modesty that Beowulf does not. Consider the archetypical modern hero, Spiderman, and his characteristics. Peter Parker’s doubts about his ability and personal life are what make him appear more human. Therefore, the modern reader would appreciate his anxiety, because the contemporary person would share his emotion. The story of Beowulf opens with the horrific monster Grendel destroying the mead hall of Heorot. When Beowulf hears of the trouble in Heorot, he decides to travel to the Danes and destroy Grendel. Granted, this is noble, but his further discussion shows Beowulf in a more conceited and rude light. When he enters Heorot, Unferth begins to challenge the character and strength of Beowulf during a swimming match he had with Breca. Following these accusations, Beowulf brags about his ability and insults both Breca and Unferth: “I was the strongest swimmer of all […] Breca could never move out farther or faster
