The average velocity is the velocity you would need if you were to travel from where you started to where you stopped at constant velocity. Let’s say you start your day in bed and you end your day in bed. During the day, you traveled quite some distance, but at the end of the day, you were right back where you started. Your average velocity, then, would be zero – if you had started in bed and gone nowhere, you’d end up in the same place you did with all the running around.

The average velocity is the slope of the straight line joining your initial position to your final postion on a position/time graph.

Your average velocity is approximately what you would get if you sampled your velocity at regular intervals over a set time and then averaged all of those values together. The more frequently you sample, the closer the result will be to your actual average velocity.
