At 1:00 p.m., a car leaves a city and travels north at a rate of 55 mi/h.  An hour later, a second car leaves

the city and travels south at a rate of 60 mi/hr.  At what time will the two cars be 285 miles apart?

Could someone please explain this?

At the end of the first hour, the two cars are 55 miles apart, so you need to figure out how long they travel to put another 230 miles distance between them (285 -55 = 230).

55x + 60x = 230

115x= 230

x = 2

To check:

(55 x 2) + (60 x 2) = 230 + 55 = 285

car 1= 55x

this is saying that every hour the car travels 55 miles

car 2= 60x-60

this is saying that every hour the car travels 60 miles, but 60 miles are subtracted because it left an hour later.

x represents each hour.

55x+60x-60

use a guess and check method. by filling in the blanks to the above eqaution. adding the to cars tells how many miles apart each car is

choose 1 hour first.:

55(1)+60(1)-60=55

this means the cars are 50 miles apart.

now try 2 hours since 1 hour is far from your goal of 285 miles.

55(2)+60(2)-60=170

since this didnt reach your goal yet try 3 hours

55(3)+60(3)-60=285

After the first hour, the first car would have traveled 55 miles, so the two cars would be 55 miles apart. After the second hour, the first car would have traveled 110 miles and the second 60 miles, so now they are now 170 miles apart. After the third hour, the first car would have traveled 165 miles, and the second car 120 miles, so they are now 285 miles apart. The first car started at 1:00 pm, so 3 hours later it would be 4 pm, so the answer is 4 pm.
