Okay, 8=?-9…. is not the same as 9-?=8

Ex. 3-2=1, 1 doesn’t = 2-3, 2-3=-1

In order for the commutative property of addtion to occur, you have to turn all subtraction signs into plus.

ex. 9-2= 9+(-2)

So, to your question,

8=x-9

+9 +9

17=x

So, your answer is 17.

move the ? to the left side of the equal sign, move the 8 to the right, then you change the minus sign to a plus sign.

?=8+9

?=17

Then test to make sure.

8=17-9

There ya go…
