It is a question that could be answered either way. An “old growth forest” can never be replaced with another old growth forest, not in any reasonable period of time, so in that sense it is non-renewable. However, reforestation works, so it can be replaced but the trees will not be old growth and will certainly not be as big any time in the near future.

Renewable. Trees will regrow. It will take a long time for them to regrow – and certainly not in our lifetime.

However, proper forest management can achieve it.

Imagine a forest that you cut down 4 trees. Will the forest regrow to fill in those holes? Yes. Within an old growth forest, new growth happens all the time. Trees do not live forever. They replace themselves with their seedlings.

The secret to forest management is to not cause the character of the forest to change by trying to get all the lumber out in a short period of time. You harvest the trees that would otherwise die or break. Leave the rest for another day/year.
