Are a-b and b-a opposites?

Yes. If a=2 and b=3, then a-b=-1; and b-a=1.

You can do this with any two numbers and it will always work out to be opposites. I guess it could be written like this:

|a-b|=|b-a|

It depends what you are asking. If they are just letters then they can’t be ‘opposites’. Letters don’t have opposites.

If it’s algebraic then a and b would have values. Let’s call a 10 and b 5.

Then a – b = 10 – 5 = 5

b – a = 5 – 10 = -5

So, I suppose, loosely you could say that 5 and -5 are opposites although in my mind they’re just numbers.

They’re not opposites, they’re inverses. Opposite is a term that is never used in mathematics, if that’s what you’re trying to do.
