Anyone have a good analogy?

I need an analogy for how an optical sensor works. If you dont know how it works let me briefly expain. The sensor picks up light from a fixed point and calculates the distance from the sensor to that fixed point.

It’s sorta like an instrument used by police to see the speed of an oncoming vehicle. They send a laser beam to the oncoming vehicle, and the returned response discloses the speed. Those sneaky rats.
