amazon rain forest question?

I find the rain forest to be very interesting and would love to learn more about it.

What kind of major problems do they have if any?

What do you think that we as citizens or even the local government could do to lessen the negative impact on the environment in this region and prepare it for a more sustainable future?

Any good websites please let me know, thanks. 🙂

Well, scientists can’t really do anything to save the rainforest, they could only influence people with their research conclusions to stop their deatructive behaviors because these result in negative consequences for people; the reality is that it benefits people living around the Amazon Rainforest to practice slash/and/burn agriculture, or to down trees for sale, often to foreign markets (a.k.a. exotic hardwood), or to foreign companies for producing medicines. Of course these behaviors are destroying the rainforest yet benefiting the locals. Everyone knows this, huh? Why bother “saving” the rainforest? Aside from the uses above, the Amazon is one of the larger carbon sinks on the planet, which moderates global average temperature. You know that the Svalbard “doomsday” vault houses the seeds of many plants. In case the temperatures get too high for life as we know it to exist, these seeds would be available to sustain human life. Anyhow, Brazilian scientists are trying to clone some animals which are endangered from human actions regarding the rainforests. Brazil is trying to attract new scientists (see link). Izabella Teixeria, Environment Minister of Brazil, is trying to balance economic development with environmental protection, but the policy is slacking (see second link).
