algebra probs!!!! need help??!!!?

We’ll be having our finals this tuesday and I need some help with the ff probs:

1.) A rectangular building whose depth is twice its frontage is divided into two parts by partition that is 30 ft from, and parallel to, the front wall. If the rear portion of the building contains 3500 ft^2, find the dimensions of the building.

2.) A man purchased some shares of stock for S1560. Later, when the price had gone up S24 per share, he sold all but 10 of them for S1520. How many shares had he bought?

3.) Draw a sketch of a line passing through the point P(-1,6) and having slope m = -2. Also sketch a line through the same point having slope m= -1/2

4.) Draw a sketch of a line passing through the equation 5x+2y-10=0 by finding the axis and y axis intercept?

**is the answer here (2,0) and (0,5)

****and oh, how do you do the find the equation that lies parallel to the given equation and the perpendicular one too…

thanks so much!!!

really need to Ace this exam..

I can help you a lot..but it will take a while.

But heres the formulas for a perpendicular, and parallel line.

To find a parallel line, you simply change the constant.

For example: lets say you want to find a line perpendicular to the line y=5x+8.

Now, we just change the number where 8 is, we can make it negative as well. Just some examples: y=5x+2; y=5x+3; y=5x-7…etc.

For a perpendicular line you need to find the slope and take the negative reciprocal of it.

Or let me slow this down a bit.

Lets say you wanted to find a line parallel to y=2/6x+8

Well first you find the reciprocal of the slope (2/6 becomes 6/2)

then you make it negative ( -6/2 which simplifies to – 3)

Meaning that y=-3x+8 is perpendicular to y=2/6x+8 You make change the term without an x if you want though.

Now, I only have enough time to help you with problem 3.

you fill this in the following equation:

you know that an equation (y= mx+b.)

well, it already gave us m, x, and y

m= -2 ( it had already given us the slope)

x= -1 (its the x coordinate)

y=6…because it gave us the y coordinate

now we plug that in.

6= -2(-1)+b

6=2+b

4=b

So we know know that the equation for that line is y=-2x+4.

Next, we simply use the same formula again

I’m just gonna shorthand this part, I’m pretty sure i explained it well earlier.

6=-1/2(-1) +b

6=1/2+b

5 1/2 =b

so now we know that the equation of the second line is y=-1/2x+5 1/2

Good luck with the rest from other answerers!
