Net result means the final difference, or final result, or the end product.

x – 5 +3

this means, x is ground level where he started

… first he dug 5 feet (so; x-5)

… … then he added back 3 feet (+3)

or if you are a little bit more advanced

x = the final height of the ground in the dig-site;

x = t -5 +3

this assumes the height of the initial dig was at T feet, with this it is possible to find either; the height before he started or the height after he finished by knowing the other one (IE if you know t you can find x , or if you know x you can find t)
