Your variables are all in the exponents, which implies you’re going to need logarithms. It would be easiest if the bases were the same, but they aren’t. However, one of your bases is 3 and the other is 9, which ought to suggest something since 9 = 3^2.

3^((x^2) – 5) – 9^(x – 1) = 0

3^((x^2) – 5) – 3^2(x – 1) = 0

3^((x^2) – 5) = 3^(2x – 2)

Take the log base 3 of both sides:

x^2 – 5 = 2x – 2

Now you have a quadratic, which should be easy to solve.

I think algebra gets really confusing aswell.. but with your sum, try and write it in expanded form and you may find it easier to make sense of!.. good luck
