This is a simple fraction addition that needs to be reduced when you get your answer.

First you start by adding these as if they are plain ol’ fractions. Since they have a common denominator it is easy to add them:

x/20 + 15x/20 = (x +15x) / 20 = 16x/20

exactly like for example, 2/5 + 1/5 = (2+1)/5 = 3/5

Finally you need to express this fraction in its simplest form and what that means in this case is to reduce the fraction. We can do this by understanding what things we can do to a fraction so that we can simplify it.

In this case 16x/20 can be changed so that it is something we can work with. By this I mean separating it into its parts.

16x/20 can look like =====> x/1 times 16/20

now you have something you recognize and that is 16/20.

This can be reduced to 4/5. But don’t forget you still have the x/1 and so you have include it in your answer.

So: x/1 times 4/5 equals ======> 4x/5

Eventually with practice you won’t need to do anything this long and drawn out but since you are learning it’s good to see the steps and why things work the way they do.

Good luck
