let’s say the time he walks 3 km/h is called t1

and the time he walks 4 km/h is called t2

so

t1 + t2 = 5

and

3×t1 + 4×t2 = 18

if t1 + t2 = 5 then t2 = 5 – t1

and so:

3×t1 + 4× (5-t1) = 18

3×t1 + 20 – 4×t1 =18

20 – t1 = 18

t1 = 2 hours

which is the time he walks 3 km/h

and t2 = 3 hours

now lets test

(3 × 2) + (4 × 3) = 6 + 12 = 18

so there you have it.
