8th Grade Science Homework. . .?

Identify the Independent and dependent variables. The problem is I don’t understand it.

Here are 3 examples:

1. Temperature | Hours of heating

Independent = Hours of Heating

Dependent = Temperature

2. Stopping Distance | Speed of a car

Independent = Speed of a car

Dependent = Stopping Distance

3. Number of people in a family | Cost per week for groceries

Independent = Number of people in family

Dependent = Cost of food

Could you help me do 3 more?

Tree Age | Average Tree Height

Independent = ?

Dependent = ?

Test Score | Number of hours studying for a test

Independent = ?

Dependent = ?

Population of a city | Number of schools needed

Independent = ?

Dependent = ?

You don’t have to give me the answers, you could just give me the steps.

Thanks in advance.

the hours of heating effects temp.

speed of car effects stopping distance

number of people in family effects food

its like a story question that says a car is travleing south, how long will it take to come to a complete stop? the stoping distance depends on the speed of the vehicle to be able to determine. so independent= tree age and dependent= average hight. because you would need to know the age of a tree to know its average hight at that age. i hope i didnt confuse you too much.

The dependent variable is the result, the independent variable is the input, or the thing that you can change. Think of these things as little scientific experiments, so for the first example you can directly affect how long something is heated, and the result is the thing’s temperature. You can’t directly change the temperature, so temperature must be the result of the experiment, and the dependent variable.

You can determine how many hours you study, but you can’t pick your test score.

A tree’s age affects it’s height (more age, more height), but the trees height does not determine it’s age (you can’t trim the tree to make it younger).

Is the population of a city determined by the number of schools needed, no.

Remember, the result (tree height, test score, schools needed) is the dependent variable.

Independent means the variable that works alone. Dependent is the variable that relies on the first number to make its value rise or fall.

For example:

As a tree gets older, essentially, it will get taller. The age of the tree is the independent variable, because it gets older on its own.

The dependent variable, however, is the height of the tree. A tree cannot start out at ten feet tall. It takes time to grow from a seed to this height, right? So, the height of the tree is dependent on the age.

Make sense?

Email me if you need more help, and I can try to explain it better.

Tree Age | Average Tree Height

Independent = Age

Dependent = Height

If you put it in a sentence, it makes it easier and makes more sense. So for example:

The temperature depends (is dependent) on the total hours of heating.

The stopping distance depends on the speed of car.

Cost per week depends on number of people.

Average height depends on tree age.

So does the test score depend on hours of studying OR hours of studying depends on the test score.

Does the population of a city depend on the number of schools needed OR does the number of schools needed depend on the population?

too bad i am giving you the answers

Tree Age | Average Tree Height

Independent = tree age

Dependent = average tree height

Test Score | Number of hours studying for a test

Independent = number of hours studying for a test

Dependent =test score

Population of a city | Number of schools needed

Independent = population of a city

Dependent = number of schools needed

It seems pretty simple. All you have to do is decide which detail depends on the other. For example, the life span of a person depends on their lifestyle.

Independent is what you put in and can be changed n most cases.

Dependent is the output; what comes out.
