With any equation like this the thing you’re aiming to do is get x on one side and a number on the other.

The way you manipulate an equation is to do the same thing to both sides. So with this equation to get -1/3 to the other side just add 1/3 to both sides. That will leave you with 2/3x+4+1/3=5x.

Then you could move the 2/3x over to the other side so that all the x’s are on the right hand side. To do this just subtract 2/3x from both sides.

That leaves you with 4+1/3=5x-2/3x

Then just do the adding and subtracting, leaving you with 4+1/3=4+1/3x

Then to make the right hand side x rather than 4+1/3x just divide both sides by 4+1/3.

x=1

(think of 4+1/3 as 4 and 1 third, can’t type that on the computer)

when solving equations with 1 variable always isolate x to one side and the constants to the other.

2/3x+4 = 5x-1/3

-2/3x -2/3x

4= 4 1/3x-1/3

+1/3 +1/3

4 1/3 = 4 1/3x

/ 4 1/3 / 4 1/3

x = 1

2/3x+4=5x-1/3

2/3x+4+1/3=5x

4 &1/3 = 5-2/3x

4& 1/3 = 4 &1/3x

x = 1

the easiest way is to first multiply each side by 3 to remove the denominators and that will give you

2x + 12 = 15x -1

(then subtract 2x from both sides)

12 = 13x – 1

(add 1 to both sides)

13 = 13x

(divide both sides by 13)

x=1

2/3x+4=5x-1/3

2+4+1/3=5x*3x

6+1/3=15x^2

19/3=15x^2

19/3(15)=x^2

95=x^2

x=95^1/2

x=9.747
