Hi Steph – Let’s see what we can do:

2 – 1/ 4(b-12) = 9 Two things. Try to get b by itself and try to get b out of a demoninator. Let’s do these.

– 1/ 4(b-12) = 7 (subtract 2 for each side)

-1/4 = 7(b-12) (multiply each side by b-12)

-1/4 = 7b -84

83 3/4 = 7b

83.75/7 =b

11.9642 = b

Check

2 – 1/4(b-12) = 9

2 – 1/4 (11.9642-12) = 9

2 – 1/4(-.0357)=9

2 – 1/(-.1428) =9

2 – (-7.00) =9

9 =9 YES!!

1. multiply every number by 4/1 on both sides of the equal sign.

8-1(4b-48)=36

2.distribute the -1 to the 4b and 48.

8-4b+48=36

3.combine the 48 and 8

-4b+56=36

4. now solve like a 2 step equation

5. subtract 56 from both sides of equal sign

-4b=-20

6.now divide both sides of the equal sign by -4

than you’ll get what b equals

distribute the 2-1/4 to the b and the -12. then isolate the variable on one side and divide.

distibute -1/4 to b and -12

2-1/4b + 3=9

add like terms and then subtract from 9

-1/4b=4

multiply by -4 on both sides

b= -16

First subtract 2 from both sides

then divided both sides by negative 1/4

then add 12 to both sides

2-1/4 = 1.75

1.75b-21 = 9

your on your own from there…
