In some areas they have yearly snow days so they start earlier and end later to allow for two weeks of snow days and still meet the 20 week course requirements per semester.

Finally there are some schools experimenting with year round school and this means 17 week semesters instead of 20 week semesters. So you start way later and end much sooner. You might start end of Septemeber and be out by mid May, then those take summer would start in May and go into September, but this is very experimental and few schools does thing on the regular basis.

I find that in the US, the farming states start in August and other states start in Sept. This started so schools could let kids out for a few days during the fall harvest time and still get in all the school days needed. Now kids that start in August just get out early in May.

years ago the majority of ppl lived on farms, had lots of children to help work the farm, it was all done by hand/horses/oxen. The farm came first because it was the livlihood of the family. most of the harvest ws finished by September, so with the work done, it was ok to go to school.

This was also before air-conditioned schools so the weather was getting cooler.

I always thought it was that the cooler weather was better for learning. I figured that the school year started years ago when there was no AC, but they were able to heat the one room schoolhouse. And the summer was meant for planting crops and saving them for winter..
