failed exams…even after studying….should I change my major?

I’m in my second year of college, and I’m a pre-dentistry major, but I just started to fill the prerequisite courses for dental school, but my current situation is very discouraging, See. I’m taking Chemistry and Biology (200 levels), in my Biology class I have gotten a 67% in the first exam and a 72% the second exam..and as for Chemistry I manged to earn 73% for the class right now…and I spent at least 10 hours a week for Biology and Chemistry, but after the second exam, I’m beginning to think that I’m not going to make it..but pre-dentistry is what I really want to do….am I still not studying enough? maybe I should just forget it? and switch to something else?

Don’t give up! You are on the right track. Dentistry is hard and there are going to be obstacles you have to overcome. You have to fail something in order to succeed. Especially if you really want to do it. Remember it takes about 8-10 years to understand everything completely. It’s the whole part of the process. yeah you are expected to study a little longer but don’t cram, it’s bad.

you are clearly studying a lot. is the material not getting through? if so, you should get help. getting help from different people gets the information across differently each time. it’s bound to click at some time.

is the material not that interesting? you said you want to be a dentist but if the classes that lead you there aren’t interesting, dentistry probably won’t be all that interesting. it’s all interconnected. dentistry isn’t independent of chemistry or biology. you need to know them for that field. so if these classes aren’t interesting you, you should consider exploring other classes.

New material can be difficult and challenging. Don’t let a few average or low test scores discourage you. What I do recommend is seeing your professor during office hours. Go to your campus tutorial center.

If you really believe dentistry is right for you, stick this out a bit longer.

Perhaps you just need to develop another approach to studying. Sometimes people will find that they study for hours and hours, but fail exams. Why? Their studying is inefficient. Learn about the different ways in which people learn, find out what your learning style is and then adjust your study habits as you see fit. Of course, it’s entirely possible you are in the wrong program too, but don’t give up until you’ve learned how to properly study with your mind.

No way if you realy love it but just not getting it then you should talk to your teachers. If there busy then you should talk to your concerler maybe some close friends who are older. You realy need to stay forces on it but try to relaxes and just enjoy the experience. Maybe do some extra hours work and rethink how you study, like if your just reading the book and highlighting maybe you should do that and summirze the chapter. Or after the lecture about 2-5hrs latter review your lecture notes.

College professors very often try to terrify the class by giving everybody failing grades until after the last exam. Also, you are passing almost all of them anyway, but maybe they are not high enough to get into D.D. school.

Just study your hardest and wait until you have your final grades before making any decisions.

if its really what you want to do, then keep going. i have a lot of friends in pre-dentistry and i know that its very competitive, but wait it out atleast until the end of your semester and see what your grades end up being….alot of times i swear that ive been doing bad in classes bc i feel ive failed exams and i end up with an A or B….you never really know until the end of the semester. wait it out, anyways if you wanted to switch majors you cant do it until a new semester anyways. being a sophmore, you do have time to switch, but not much. just keep going!

Check it out….I thought I wanted to be a Dental Hygienist..

Till I got to “practical” …..I freaked..and it was horrible.

Is it what you really want to do? Is it what your parents want you to do? Is it expected of you by someone? Or have you really checked it out and know what your getting into….It’s MAJOR work! I don’t know about you, but I missed a lot of fun..because I wanted to be a Hygienist ( You had to get a 4.0 in all of your Sciences..before moving to the next!)I thought..good money…hours…respected profession…But I hated it!!!! I hated it! I hated it!

Do something that you LOVE to do….If you hate your job, your unhappiness will spill into the rest of your life…Home, marriage, relationships, and even you own personal health could be affected.

By the way, I became a Teacher

Good Luck to You!!

Stick with what you have. You’re already in the 2nd year so changing streams midway may not be a good option.

My advice is to get some tutoring and start afresh with your studies. Approach it with a positive mind and the will to succeed.

Try a little harder. See a tutor. You may be studying long enough, but not in the right way.
