What ways would you suggest promoting a local free homeschool sponsored event?

Also, what kinds of activities would make you more prone to drive a slight distance to go to said event?

Ditto hoamsch1’s ideas on advertising your homeschooling event – some really good ideas there. However, insofar as local yahoo groups I would actually contact the group owners and ask them to send the info along. A) The info will carry a little more clout coming from someone they recognize, and B) the list owner and/or list may not appreciate you joining just to advertise your event.

Additionally, I’d look up local groups’ websites and send them the info to pass along. Online community calendars are another good one, I know a lot of HS parents who check these regularly. Also, make sure your info is out there as early as possible – I know alot of us plan our calendars early and are more likely to attend if its something we have scheduled in advance.

Events we’d go out of our way to attend? Something ‘different’ then we can usually do locally. Events with a lot of education and enrichment about different subjects (espeically science or local history) are high on our list. Also, activities that are more likely to envolve the kids participating in groups (as opposed to just walking around to look on their own) are a big plus. The ability to bring a picnic, or get something to nosh on onsite or close by is nice just for convenience. Ditto the opportunity to buy or make souvenirs as a memory of the outing. There are lots of reasons we’d drive a little ways for an event, I guess the most important thing really (for us) would be knowing far enough in advance to make plans for a day trip.

Best of luck with your event – hope the kids have a blast!

Find out if there are any Yahoo groups (or other Internet groups) that are geared toward homeschoolers in that specific area, join the e-group and advertise there.

Also hang posters, fliers, etc. Try to post in churches since many homeschoolers are Christians, also in libraries, book stores, teacher supply stores.

As far as what kind of things I would drive to. If it is a single event and not an ongoing group it would need to be fun activities like swimming in a lake or pool, playing volley ball, carnival type games (not a whole carnival, but just things like a ring toss booth or ping ball toss where kids can win a small prize). Some kind of free giveaway would attract some, but would be costly to those hosting the event, unless you sold refreshments to offset the cost. Some cheap giveaway items would be helium balloons for the kids, and information packets about local homeschool activities and issues for the parents.

Now actually it wouldn’t take all of this to get me to drive somewhere, but I have hosted events before and found that it takes things like this to get some people to come.

People here are saying that McDonalds don’t make people fat, people choosing to eat in their restaurants make themselves fat. That’s the same kind of spurious logic the National Rifle Association in the US uses when they say “guns don’t kill people, people do”. Well, yes, ok, maybe. But the guns help, a little bit, I think. When one is asked to form a mental picture of a McDonalds restaurant, thoughts of healthy customers full of vitality don’t really spring to mind. So yes, it is ironic they’re sponsoring the Olympics. Big time.
