I think its a good idea. as long as its affordable.

The way i look at it you might miss your soul mate because her parents cant afford the high price clothes. It would make it hard to tell who the gangs are. There’s enough pier pressure in school as it is.

Just one Les thing for kids to worry about.

Your thinking is skewed. Individuality is not a civil right. Civil rights have to do with equal treatment of people, not protection of ‘individuality’.

You are an individual regardless of what you wear. You can wear the same thing day after day and that would not change your individuality because what you wear has nothing to do with your individuality. You are an individual because of who you are INSIDE, not on the outside. Those who think their individuality is only maintained by what they wear are lost and insecure about their true sense of self.

To actually answer your question, I think dress codes are a great idea. This is not a violation of any right because nobody is forced to go to public school: there are private schools, charter schools, online schools, homeschooling… And since there are choices, nothing is being forced. Further to the point, your suggestion that following a dress code is an infringement of civil rights would mean that any job that requires a uniform is a violation.

Besides, children don’t have anything legally protected in terms of the clothes they wear. If their parents want them in certain clothes, then the parents are allowed to do that.

Why are they a great idea? One, because they even out everything so that those with money and those without money have no obvious distinctions, which reduces cliquing and bullying. Two, because school isn’t supposed to be a fashion show and far too much time is spent focusing on who’s wearing what and the whole angst over what to wear. Three, because what many kids these days are wearing is absolutely ridiculous and it would be good for them to learn a little decorum.

Of course, this is the homeschooling section and my children are homeschooled, which means there’s no need for uniforms, and they aren’t growing up in a milieu where they think that fashion statements are that important, so it’s just a non-issue.

No, it’s not a violation of your civil rights; civil rights include being able to get a job, no matter what your skin color or religious beliefs, or being able to buy a home wherever you can afford it. Civil rights have no bearing on your clothing.

If it did, any job that requires a uniform (from fry guy at McDonalds to a neurosurgeon in scrubs) would be illegal.

I have found the dress code to actually be a positive thing for most students, and it doesn’t take away your individuality. It often helps to increase focus in class, and it helps to lower the number of fights that take place. And as soon as you’re done with school, you can go home and change.

Your individuality can be expressed through your clothing, but that is only one way. There are so many other ways – feel free to use them 🙂

I think dress codes in public schools are a good idea and greatly needed! I go to a public school and I’m going to be a junior in highschool and I’ve seen how some people dress. People wear: pants that show their thongs/underwear, skirts that show their butts, clothing that is 5 sizes to small, shirts that are way to low cut etc. Not to be mean but nobody wants to see things like that and the sad thing is that at my school people are wearing this things even when the dress code says they can’t.

People don’t need to wear revealing clothing to show their individuality. When you dress like that all you are showing is that you have no self respect, it does not show that your an individual. I think schools set these dress codes for good reasons. People do come in and out of highschools to pick up their kids, for school functions etc. So would you feel safe if your teenage girl was dressing extremely revealing infront of some old men that came to see a football game or basketball game? And they dressed that way all because the school allowed it? It’s just a thought.

Anyway, these are all kids that go to public schools, so why would they even need to wear revealing clothing anyway?

I homeschool my son. I work in the cafeteria and drive a bus for the local public high school. I wear a uniform and a name tag to identify myself as a school employee.

Our students do not wear uniforms and we have an enforced dress code. Students repeatedly challenge the dress code and are repeatedly given ‘coverups’ or sent home for violations.

What is my opinion? There is very little individuality among high school students. It would only be a violation of your civil rights if only you were given a dress code.

Considering the styles that are becoming popular today, some kind of dress code is probably necessary to keep someone from showing up in their birthday suit or wearing only stickers.

Does it take away individuality?

NO, I believe that I am as much an individual regardless of the clothes I wear.

Have you seen whats out there for teens today? Lets make this better younger lids want to dress like those teens! Dress codes are there for a reason I mean how distracting would it be if a girl were practically falling out of her clothes because she could wear what she wanted to school? Think about this when my parents were in school 30+ years ago if a girls skirt didn’t touch the floor it was too short. Shorts were not allowed for any one. Today the clothes are as short as you can get it but the school says finger tip legenth guess what if your clothes are finger tip legenth and you bend over you may expose more than you really want too. Here our kids are in uniforms until High School in the parish next to us kids are in uniform until graduation. The schools with the kids in uniform have less violence and less charges of sexual harrassment than the schools here that don’t have uniforms because they are allowing the kids to wear clothes that are too short and too tight.

Nope, personally if I see the fashions in the stores today, and how some parents allow their children to dress, I firmly believe that uniforms for schools are the best option for everyone.

Individuality? if is is about being an individual than how come they all try to look the same, or identify with a particular group?

I think dress codes are a good idea, and it does nothing to deter individuality. It just means that students will have to find other ways to show that they are different besides the superficial, outside means.
