Some one please help me with my english?

I need some help quick. on tuesday I have to go take a test to see if I can take any classes at the community college. the problem is that my english stinks and over 90% of the classes that are still open requires me to get at least a 75 on my english test. the last time I took it (last year) I only got a 70 on english but they raised the requirements for all of the good classes. I was home schooled all my life and the ONLY areas I have ever had problems are math and english. but last year when I started college (2 years early through a dual enrollment program) I started math that was 5 levels higher than the classes that 95% of the high school grads that year took. so even though I struggled with it I started at a much higher level. but I cannot seem to get my engligh up to par for those classes. because I am not 18 I cannot take the lower english classes and I can’t teach it to myself, I have tried. what do I do? and help would be greatly appreciated

Just looking at the way your phrased your question, your English seems to be a lot better than many of the high school graduates in my neighborhood. There is an excellent book, on line called The Elements of Style. It has been around forever and may help you brush up on your skills

If it’s grammar rules, etc. you need help with, Easy Grammar has a great program for high school-level students (that’s actually why she wrote the program – to help high school level students who didn’t have a strong background in grammar). There’s another program called Analytical Grammar that has been highly recommended to me, although I’ve never used it.

I know this sounds strange, but you might see if you can get your hands on a copy of _Grammar Rock_, the video that has all those commercial-length videos of different grammar rules set to music (they used to run on Saturday mornings, during cartoon time!) The songs are really catchy and will stay with you for YEARS afterwards.

You might see if the CC allows those with low test scores to take remedial classes to help you improve your scores. At our local CC, the test is really more of a “placement” test to see where you will begin (remedial or regular, college-level courses).

Tuesday doesn’t give you a lot of time. The exams are probably a lot of writing? Do they give out study guides for these exams or do you just walk in cold?

For a quick fix, think HARD about what was on the last exam you took, and think about what you struggled with then focus on that.

If you do not make the 75, I would suggest picking up a copy of Easy Grammar and Writing Strands and brush up on writing and grammar skills, then review writing styles, poetry types, things like that. Find a upper highschool level language arts text book and review the concepts it covers.

Like I said, Tuesday isn’t much time and panicking will not increase your grade. Just stop and think about what is on those exams, then Monday morning call the college and ask them if there are any study guides or helps for the exam.

Without seeing a sample of your writing, it would be hard to say. However,

You can try:

-Sylvan

-English tutors are available through community colleges.

-Seek out private tutors through craigslist.

-Maybe you can audit a lower English class on your own accord (if that is possible)

-Seek out a college student who is getting their BA or Masters in English and pay them a few bucks.

-Try going to your community center to see if you can get tutoring there.

-Barnes & Noble might have study guides there.

Go to your library and check out The Little Brown Handbook. This book is the best source for grammar and punctuation. I got it in college, and have used it with my teen.

And/or you can go to the companion website which has many pointers and exercises.
