I want to relocate to teach special education, suggestions?

Anyone know of a good school to earn a masters degree in special education? I’m parenting 3 kids with 3 different diagnosises and want to use what I’ve learned as a parent to help other families in a classroom setting. Please note that this should also be in a state/district with REAL special education programs not just a placement with normal peers no matter what. State special education programs should offer real intervention or I won’t be able to work in the field. So who’s had positive experiences with special education and what state do you live in?

I got my M.Ed. from the University of Nevada, Reno. The school district in Reno has a variety of placement options for students in special education, from a school dedicated to only serving students in special education, self-contained classrooms contained within regular schools, resource rooms for pull-out and push-in (pull-out = students leave general education class to go to resource room for special help in specific subjects for a pre-determined time each day; push-in = special education teacher goes to general education classroom to team teach with the general education teacher a specific subject every day). I taught a self-contained class within a regular school and loved it!

Obviously, what is offered in each school may be different and the quality of instruction offered is dependent upon the individuals involved.

I found the UNR masters program in special education to be good with excellent, devoted instructors who have a wealth of knowledge in their field.

Don’t forget your rights under special ed federal law (IDEA), especially FAPE (free appropriate public education) – many schools mess up on the “appropriate” part – fight for your rights with an advocate if you need to.

I work in an international school with an American curriculum and a very strong special ed program. Children of faculty members attend for free and of course also have the benefit of exceptional programs in art, music, drama, dance, etc. in addition to the excellent core curriculums. We work 190 days per year, get great benefits which include housing allowances and cost of living benefits (since we are living in a foreign country with a different economy from the USA), and lots of continued education funding. Where I am teaching, American employees do not pay taxes for any earnings under around $82000. For me, it has been a fabulous opportunity to travel (which I always wanted to do), but also to make a significant impact on the special ed students with whom I work. I encourage you to check out international schools, as each has its own benefits and policies. There are job fairs in major cities in the USA where you can go to interview, if you are interested. In some cases, the interview can take place over the phone or even at the local airport!

I hope this was helpful for you. Best wishes!

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania has an excellent bachelor’s program in special education. Unfortunately, the school does not have a masters program, but it would definitely be worth looking into. The professors are excellent and they really care about their students. The degree is a dual certification in elementary ed and special ed, but that doesn’t mean that you would only be certified to teach elementary special ed. The special ed certification allows you to teach students ages 3-21 years old. An education degree from Kutztown would be honored in any state. Kutztown is known for putting out quality teachers.

I suggest Murray State University in Murray Kentucky. They teach skills required for a teacher in the collaboration, resource, and self contained settings. They are a smaller school with an excellent reputation. You would qualify for an apartment in the Family Housing complex (whose cost would be covered through loans and grants). You children would attend the Murray City schools where the ARC of which you would be a member determines the least restrictive environment for each of the children. A school but would pick them up at your door, day care, or a combination depending on you needs. Also, if you teach in Kentucky 25% of you school debt would be forgiven for each year. Teach 4 years and you have no debt.

Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN has a great special education programs. Also, St. Cloud State, MN offers great special education programs. I agree with you that placement with normal peers is not REAL special education.

a very good and useful e book is “you’re Gonna Love This newborn” by ability of Paula Kluth. this is topic is coaching (as a beginner) in an inclusive lecture room..as a rule autistic little ones, yet it may practice to many particular needs. Paula Kluth is properly customary interior the sped field for her coaching skills. She speaks everywhere in the country and supply super perception. i’d desire to assert, it particularly is aggravating which you have only taken a “couple suitable training.” aggravating interior the experience your college gadget presented you this place whilst by ability of federal regulation in thought you will desire to be qualified educationally..ideally overqualified. individually, if my newborn have been being taught by ability of a under qualified educator, i might sue. i’m not saying this to berate you, yet to help you realize that we mothers and fathers of particular needs little ones are fierce protectors and advocates. would desire to you % to settle for this place, individually i’ve got faith, you will desire to touch any particular guidance instructor on your district and %. their brains.
