How do Homeschoolers get a work permit?

I am a homeschool from California and I am going to apply for a job. But being a minor requires a work permit. I am homeschooled and have no idea how to get a work permit… Does anyone know how?

Another question always asked is about work permits. Most states have only appointed public school superintendents as the “issuing officer” for the work permit. Any homeschooler can go to his/her local school district to get a work permit in any state. Some private schools are issuing officers as well, and in some states a homeschooler can get the permit from the state. A student enrolled in a private school may obtain a work permit from their local public high school upon request. However, public high schools do not like issuing them to home schoolers and sometimes question the validity of the private school of enrollment. Home school programs can obtain the paperwork to issue work permits to their students. The process involves: 1. A student identifying a work place which desires to hire them, 2. Obtaining a work permit application from your school, and 3. Returning the filled out form to your school, which will then issue a work permit. The issuing school has the responsibility, within the law, to set the maximum number of hours a student can work per week, verify the student’s continuance in their studies, and retains the right to revoke the work permit when necessary.

The following website of the California Dept. of Education should answer most of your questions.

http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ct/we/wpfaq.asp#13

See question #20.

In short, anyone younger than 18 who has not graduated from high school is required by California laws to obtain a work permit upon employment.

The California Education Code (Sections 49110 and 49110.1) gives the primary responsibility for the issuance of work permits to the superintendents of public school districts or, in some cases, to county superintendents. When a student in a private school needs a work permit, she must get it from the public school district in which she lives (usually from a work experience coordinator who has been designated by the superintendent) or from her private school if the public school superintendent has authorized the private school to issue work permits. Hopefully, your parents have files a private school affidavit.

If you run into trouble, you can contact Wes Beach at the Home School Association of California.

I think…
Usually by talking to the school; however; in most cases, if over 16, you are not required to have a work permit.

When I lived there, my son had a work permit for acting. I just went to an office at the courthouse or Civic Center, filled out about 5 minutes worth of paperwork, and they handed it to me. Pretty easy 🙂

My son was younger, so I didn’t have to provide any transcripts; if they require a GPA or anything like that, your mom should be able to provide it out of her records.

Contact your homeschool association. They can tell you where to go.

When we had the opportunity to take my daughter to California for acting, I looked into it and I know that there was somewhere else to go besides the school district (I have since forgotten what it was called, as we did not go because it would have broken up our family, so we decided to stick to the local work).

Good luck!

Go to the County offices and see if you can apply there.
