Every home is a school.?

I heard this quote today. Do you agree or disagree? Do you think your children learn more from parents and family or from their friends?

Children learn wherever they are at. But they learn quicker and retain more in a safe, trusting environment. Who is a better teacher….adults who have taken it upon themselves to provide the best that they can for their offspring or…children who have yet to learn anything about life, books, love, pain, coping with lifes adversities. The value of a good education cannot be argued by anyone but learning is not just in books, and parents have lived just a little bit longer than friends of their children.

I looked up the actual definition of school and got this from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/school:

An institution for the instruction of children or people under college age.

The family is often referred to as an institution. So yes, every home is a school. Every family, specifically. Whether parents realize it or not, they are providing instruction to their children in a lot of different ways. And I don’t just mean those who are homeschooling their children. From day one, the family is teaching that baby *something*.

I don’t know if I could say there’s a set rule as to where children learn more. It depends a lot on the parenting and the group of friends. I suppose one could argue that we are all learning something all the time, so we technically learn more, or reinforce what we’ve learned, with the people we spend the most time with. The question would then be: *what* are we learning with the people we are around? Or rather, what are our children learning from the people they are with?

Every home is indeed a school, and depending on how much time the average parent spends with their children (national average about 30 minutes a week), will be the determining factor of who, or what is going to be the greater influence on the children; parents, friends, or otherwise (media, teachers).

When parents spend a lot of time with their children they have the opportunity to not only teach them by example but also lay the foundation their children need to reject any influences, or teachings later on that may not be the best for them, and may be counter to their beliefs.

For children to trust, and respect the parents council, and take it to heart, the parents need to be available to them, answer their questions, and do more than just live in the same house.

I truly believe that children learn much, if not most of what they know from their parents, but the quality of what they learn depends on how involved the parents are with their children, and I do not mean just running them from one activity to another, I mean involved on a personal, and spiritual level.

Its true! It starts the day you bring a new baby home and never stops! A baby learns everything they need just by watching its parents and continues to learn until they die. My grandfather always said we should try to learn something new every day! I think that kids learn from every one around them all the time. It doesn’t matter who they are learning from as long as they are. Teachers have a wealth of knowledge and would love to share it with their students. Sometimes they don’t have the time because its eaten away by all the little things that happen in the day and other times they feel like their hands are tied and they don’t dare bring up a subject because it may cost them the job they love.Parents who home school are under no such regulations and are free to teach what and how they want.

Have you noticed that today’s school age children bring more homework home than we did as kids. Ever ask yourself why? Children learn best from their parents. Studies proved this so more homework is sent home for parents to do with their kids.

Most kids will tell you that they only spend 15 minutes out of each class doing that material, with the rest of the work to be done at home with parents. So if we spend longer than that in each subject, who then is really the teacher and where is the school that the subject is actually taught? Self explanitory.

I agree. We all learn from our life experiences. IF a child lives with loving responsible parents, the child will learn positive things about life. If the child is neglected they will learn that they have to look out for #1 because you can’t trust anyone else to look out for you. If they are abused they will learn that violence is the way to deal with people.

In my home, my kids learn to value God’s word first, then family, the other people outside the family, then the environment, then other things. They also learn Math, Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Science, History, Geography, Civics, Art, and music appreciation.

I agree. I think they learn more from whomever they spend the most time with and sadly, public school kids spend an awful amount of time away from home. An hour bus ride to school, school from 8 or so until 3 or so and another hour ride home or childcare. That is about 9 hours away from home not counting if they have to go to daycare or afterschool program. If you figure your child sleeps about 6-7 hours a night, they have only approximately 8 hours family time and not even 1/3 of that is actually spent with the family. I think that is sad.

If kids are around peers all day then they will obviously learn from them and mimic their behaivors. If they are at home all day then they will learn and mimic the parents behaivor. I choose to have mine home so I can model some life lessons and good morals!!

Ever hear “Children Learn what they Live”

That is very true. They may hear and see things from their friends but that doesn’t mean that’s what they’ll do. My friends do hear swearing from some of their friends but they don’t swear. Why? Because they don’t live with it at home and don’t learn it at home.

I very much agree with that quote.

I agree that every home is a school. My husband and I worked hard in order that our children learned well at home and expanded that knowledge through school and their friends.

Children learn a lot from their parents. But children are likes sponges. Whoever they are around most, they will learn from them.
