Federal Work Study is a program which provides work opportunities for students, enabling them to earn funds for meeting educational expenses. It also provides an opportunity for students to gain work experience in their areas of academic and non-academic interest. It is like any other job – you will get paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on how your school works.

Work study can be for on or off campus. The off-campus jobs are going to typically be for tutoring elementary school kids or for reading initiatives.

Usually the financial aid office coordinates all work study jobs so as to make sure you do not earn over what you have been awarded. Many financial aid offices even have someone who specifically deals with the FWS program, so start there. If your financial aid office does not handle work study jobs in-house, then they should point you to where you should go. Good luck!

Work study is for on campus jobs only, and will not work for off campu employment. It is used to support college staff, and a way for college students to earn cash while they are studying.

Work-study is considered a REAL job that works around your school schedule. Typically, you will have a set work schedule.

I had several different work-study jobs. One of them was the same hours every week. One of them had a schedule, but it varied from week to week. On another one, I had a set goal to accomplish each week & I could work basically whatever hours I wanted as long as I met my goal.
