Will the university tell me how much I will receive in grant money?

I’ve applied to DeVry, the admissions contact would not tell me how much I will receive from FAFSA, supposedly she can’t. Is this true?

She cannot tell you how much grant money you will get until it’s processed. Your school should inform you when your financial aid packet is ready for your review.

A few weeks after you fill out your FAFSA, you will receive mail or an email from the Dept of Education. This is your SAR (short for Student Aid Report). It will say something like “based on the information you gave us and if all the information is correct (either you are or are not eligible) to receive a federal Pell grant, you may be eligible for other types of assistance….”

It may go on to list other things you need to do…. read this letter carefully and ask the financial aid office at DeVry if they need a copy of it.

Also, don’t confuse the Admissions office at DeVry with the Financial Aid office at DeVry. Soon after the Fin Aid office gets (or you give them) your SAR and you turn in any supporting documentation required, they will issue you an “Award Letter” listing EXACTLY how much financial aid you qualify for and what kind. You will probably be given the opportunity to accept or decline various loans, grants, scholarships…etc. It varies based on your income. If you do not like what you are being offered… or don’t want to take out loans, try another school. Local community college, university… either of these would be cheaper.

P.S. Oh and yes, it is possible to get a refund from grants, but it only occurs in certain circumstances. Poor college student, lots of other grants or scholarships, reasonably priced school. Anyone who has ever gone to DeVry would never have received a grant refund because tuition is $7,160 a semester. (If you qualify, the max a Pell grant is is a little over $2000.00)

Having been to DeVry, let me clarify things:

1. The admissions staff do not have access to your financial aid documents unless you gave them permission (I really do not see why they would anyway).

2. The Financial Aid office is the office that can tell you.

3. Yes you have a right to know but they have a right to verify your information against your tax documents, determine the amount of money you’ll get, and then they will notify you via an award letter where you must either accept or deny the award.

4. I do not know what these people have been smoking, but YOU CANNOT GET A REFUND FROM GRANTS! I guarantee you if somebody is getting money that was in excess it’s from loans, and loans YOU HAVE TO PAY BACK!

5. DeVry is a business school. Alot of the staff and faculty will act business-like, almost acting fake. They do NOT tolerate any form of disobedience whatsoever, especially if you’re living in their aprtments or whatever they have. NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED EVEN IF LEGAL! Watch what you say and do, even if you own your own apartment. You can be suspended and expelled, and pushed through judiciaries with a jury of your peers. Many college students who get in trouble with the law, even off school grounds, or say things they shouldn’t, on public property, get suspended or expelled and it happens quite frequently.

6. Also, note that DeVry pretty much has an open door policy. They let anyone and anything in, and if you do not like immature people, go with night classes. Many of those people are working professionals in their field and need the class for their jobs, so they won’t be likely to fool around.

7. Good luck.

She is suppose to tell you Especially at a school like devry, normally they tell you before you leave the office. They did when I went to Bryman College (now Everst), Mount st Mary’s College, and Cal state northridge

She is right, she cannot tell you until your application is reviewed and then they can see if you were awarded money. You have to wait and see….

Actually, you can get a refund from grants…

If after tuition and all fees are paid to the university and you have a balance from a grant you were awarded, the university will issue a refund check for you and you may use it any way you want

No, you have every right to know. What you need to do is get the number to FAFSA and report to them what is going on and you need to find out exactly what you are getting. What if you have extra money left over. You are entitled to it. I would suggest you do this right away. Of course you have every right to know! I can’t believe she is keeping this from you.
