What do I do about my future? Anybody know any cheap colleges with GREAT financial aid?

My family has very little money. My mother is sick all the time and she only works twice a month. My mother’s boyfriend tries to help out however he doesn’t have enough. We are on every kind of financial aid plan they have so I am currently a senior in high school only 16 years old and I will be 17 on December 31 this year. I have been thinking about colleges and every college I looked at is expensive. The financial aid probably won’t even be enough. I wanna major in English so I can write children’s books. I want to be an author. Anyway I live in New Jersey but I don’t want to stay close to home. I don’t want my mom to always worry about me. I want her to know that I can manage on my own. The farthest I will go is to New York state or Pennslyvania. But we don’t have the money I need ways of getting in to good colleges that are not too expensive. I don’t want to go to a community school because it shows that I can’t live alone. Because I will have to live with my mom. What should I do?

Here’s what I think…

1. Apply for FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid). The amount of money that you receive depends on the amount of money that you and your parents make and also when you apply can also affect your amount. Apply early (January 1) so that the government will have a bigger chunk of money for you to compete with. It doesn’t matter which school you apply to. The amount will be the same. Usually the less money you and your parents make, the more grants/aids you will receive.

2. Going to community college doesn’t mean that you can’t live alone. Actually, sometimes it is a good idea to go to a community college to get you “basic” required classes that you need in a University done at a cheaper price. Talk with an advisor at both the community college and University that you plan on attending to see if those classes can transfer.

3. Start applying for scholarships right now. Talk with your school counslor about scholarships that you qualify for.

4. Student loans.

College is expensive. Many people don’t go to college because they can’t afford it. But it the end, college is worth it. Don’t pass your chance on an education just because it’s too expensive. Be resourceful, talk to advisors, counselors, family, and find a way to make it through college. Not only will you set yourself up for success later in life, but you also learn alot about yourself and you get the opportunity to meet new people and experience new things. An education is worth more than money.

Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and fill out the application. This one form will approve you for grants and let the school know that you need help. Look online at schools that are in the area you want to attend. If you stay instate the tuition will be less. After you file the fafsa and decide on a school you can contact the financial aid office at the school if you need more help. You might get enough aid in grants and scholarships to pay for everything but if you don’t, you can apply for student loans through the school financial aid office. Student loans don’t have to be paid back until 6 months after you quit being a full time student. So, if you go full time until you graduate, you won’t have to start paying back student loans until 6 months after you graduate. Start with the fafsa though. That needs to be your first step.

Have you had any interviews, if so, be sure to appear as eager as possible to start the job, don’t try to appear smart if you are applying for a “dumb” retail job. Fill out the questionaires and applications without being wordy (unless they ask you for a paragraph). It might take a year or two of working stupid jobs to find one that you really fit into. This does suck, but you have to start somewhere. I don’t know New York so I don’t know what it is like there. You could try offering to do gardening work for someone, that can be good money. Helping the elderly do things around the house is actually a big job these days. Craigslist is a great place to look. Stay away from fast food if you can help it, you can try out larger retail stores, sometimes there are managment positions that come open. Above all don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! You could work at an auto parts store, I don’t know. Heck, just keep at it.

Have you checked out your local community colleges? They are a lot cheaper than traditional colleges and once you get your associates there you can transfer to a university. Primarily the first two years you take all your basic classes so why not take them someplace cheaper and just transfer. I would try to stay away from getting too many loans though. Look for the free money. I know after I graduated I nearly had a heartattack when I got that first bill.

A college degree is not a necessity to write children’s books. I suspect a case could be built that it actually impairs any kind of professional writing career outside of the collegiate area. Pursue your dream. Get WRITER”S DIGEST and read the books and articles. Find out where successful writers did go to school. Move there and take classes on the side. Take classes that improve your knowledge of humanity, not knowledge of other peoples knowledge of humanity. Include technical courses because we live in a technical world. Write. Write. Write. Good luck.

definitely do the fafsa. it helps a lot. and you can go to your guidance counselor and ask about scholarships. for me personally i didn’t have the grades, so the best choice for me was to go to a community college, even though i felt the same as you and wanted to go be on my own. but the great thing about going to a community college is that when you’re done, you’re guaranteed acceptance to certain schools in the state and you can get your grades up. but either way when it comes to money, fafsa and scholarships will be there.
