The Student Loan process begins with the financial aid officer at your college. They figure out your income, your expenses and then let you know if you qualify for loans, grants, work/study or other financial aid. If you are eligible you then apply for the loan. Repeat the process until you graduate – then you pay the loans back. Best to get Federal student loans because the government pays the interest on the loan until you graduate. Other private loans are just deferred til you get out of school. It’s a huge subject and one cannot possibly tell you how the whole thing works here on ‘Answers’ – you need to do some research & sit down with your financial aid officer, banker or other financial person and go over the details.

Sallie Mae’s website has a ton of info on applying for colleges, how to get financial aid, loans, etc. They also have a calendar that starts during the junior year that will tell you what you need to do when.
