penn state…im so confused!!?

a few wks ago my father passed away. i currently go to penn state and havent been to classes in a few wks. im terribly far behind..from missing classes before his death and after. i decided that i wanted to leave for the semester bc w/ everything going on i need smoe time to get over all of it plus i fear that if i take on all the extra coursework on top of how i feel that itll b too much.

when i called PSU to tell them what i wanted they said if i leave for the semester that i will have to pay back most of my tuition. i asked if there was a family emergency leave or something i could take since this was a death of a parent and they siad they didnt no!!. i talked to a few different ppl from different departments and no one nos! so my question is do u no if penn state has some kind of leave that i can take due to my fathers death where i will not b penalized?

Call Penn States financial aid office ans ask to make an appointment with the Director of Financial aid. Be polite, but firm… you do not need to talk to a clerk for this. When you go, bring a copy of your father’s death certificate, or an obituary from the newspaper to prove your case.

Maybe they’ll be nice and won’t make you pay the money back… but prepare for the worst, they may ask that you go to school your next semester without financial aid. Be sure and ASK lots of questions while you are there – and don’t take anything for granted. Also, most schools have some sort of appeals process.. when you get an answer, ask if there is such an appeal.

Good Luck and sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

My mother was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of my last semester at UTexas. When I finally flew out of state to see her (about mid-semester), I spoke with each of my professors and almost every one said I could get an incomplete and finish the course in the spring. One went so far as to say I could just take the final any time I was ready and he’d give me the grade.

So my advice – talk to each professor individually and tell them your situation. If you keep them in the loop, they’re more likely to work with you than if you just don’t show up for the class.

Sorry for your loss, but yes, there is a Family Medical Leave Act that you can use, they cannot hold a death of a parent against you. Tal to your personnel dept. or a lawyer.

Most universities do and I would be very surprised if they don’t. Usually you just get Incompletes for your courses and can continue next semester or whenever you are ready.
