Paying back Pell Grant?

If you drop out of college will you have to pay back the Pell Grants you have received?

If the state matters I live in North Carolina. (United States)

Depends on the date of your drop. Have your classes started yet? Have you been in for a few weeks? Depending on the date of your drop will depend on how much has to be repaid.

If you are talking about any Pell Grant(s) received prior to the 0708 school year, then no, those do not have to be repaid.

You should talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information. Good luck!

**Edited to address your additional information:

The only aid that would have to be repaid if you finish this semestrer would be any outstanding loan you may have. Stafford loans have to be repaid starting six months after you graduate/withdraw from school (see www.finaid.org/loans for additional information).

As far as being eligible again if you want to take the semester off: it depends on when you return to school. Do you know if your school is a header or trailer when it comes to financial aid (does it consider Summer Semester the beginning of the school year or the end?). If your school is a trailer, and you decide to go summer, you could use your unused Pell grant from Spring Semester for Summer Semester. If you don’t go to school summer, you would have to complete the FAFSA for 0809 to determine your EFC and Pell eligibility. You should talk to a financial aid officer about your questions/concerns/options. Good luck!

As long as you finish the semester you are receiving the grant for, you will not have to pay the Pell grant back. If you finish your current semester and decide not to return the next semester, you do not have to pay the grant back. What gets people into trouble is when they drop out of school in the middle of the semester.. which doesn’t seem to be what you are doing.

My advice – if you don’t use your pell in the spring 08 you can use it for the summer semester usually. remind the school you didn’t use both semesters of your pell and they should be able to credit it to you.

Also, you have to reapply for fin aid every year (as soon after Jan 1st as possible). So if you are going to sit out (for what I assume would be the Spring 08) then you need to apply again for Fall 08-Spring 09. Sometimes people will qualify for Pell one year, but not the next…. depends if your financial situation changes much.

Good Luck.

No, a pell grant is a need based financial aid that is not repaid. You may want to check to see if the pell grant needs to be reported as income for tax purposes.
