From experience I would start with a local college speak with a counselor, there is no charge at a community college, at least not here in California. Explain your situation, they should be able to direct you to all sorts of programs. Example; EOPS Equal Opportunity Program Services; this program pays for all your books, bus passes to and from college, pays for day care. Helps you develop a plan to reach your educational goal. Also, they have counselors there that work with you. Don’t forget to go to the Financial Aid office, pick up a form and fill one out for each of you. Its alot of questions. But once you fill it out the first time your information is in their computers, you’ve guarranted yourself that money(fiancial aid) is reserved for you, on the next semester or year. Through this office, I know of the Pell Grant, this is for someone who is interested in a trade; Auto and Body Apprentice, Dental Assistant and many others. If you going to go for your general education and work towards a Certificate or Bachelors, Masters or PhD then you’ll be awarded fiancial aid. The college will also offer scholarships based on different criteria; gender, ethnicity, area of study, religion, and other things you put on your financial aid form. In the Financial Aid office there are counselors there also, where you will sit down with one and discuss your future and your needs. So, the name of the Financial Aid form is called the FAFSA nationwide. Also, you might want to check out www.fastweb.com this site is not a scam. I received information about this from State of Sacramento College. Your fill it out on line, there are no fees, and they match you up with all sorts of people giving money out for study, based upon different criteria, could be because your Irish, or you want to be a Nurse, Artist, or are Catholic or Christian. A company or person who helps you get scholarships should not charge you. That’s a scam. Your counselor at your college has access to scholships to you and your area of study. On the financial aid form list more than one college, this makes the colleges compete for your attendance. Therefore, giving you a better and bigger fiancial aid package. During your appointments with the opposite college let them know a ball park amount the other college is offering and ask, could they offer you more. Bet they will. I’m a single parent, with one of my own parents to look after. I’m almost done. It’s true about providing a better future, the decisions you make will shape your family’s future. My son is determined to go to college. It makes you a good role model. Hope this helps and good luck!!
